Business & Economics

At Lingfield, all Economics staff have enjoyed successful careers in a commercial setting, so are able to offer real-world expertise in areas such as law and tourism. We offer both Business and Economics at GCSE and A Level.

In Economics, students will examine topics such as the forces of demand and supply, investigating government policy and its impact on growth, as well as our role in the European Union and the effect on global trade of China's increasing power.

In Business Studies, students explore the challenge of starting a business, how the functions of a business (finance, human resources, operations and marketing) work together, the behaviour of major PLCs in challenging market environments and how culture and leadership affect decision-making.

As teachers, we are all passionate about our subject specialities, and our greatest satisfaction is seeing that being passed to the students

Courses offered:

IGCSE Economics

Economics is about all the fascinating things that are taking place around us at the moment – why are superstar footballers paid so much and nurses so little? What are the implications of Google having over 90% of the online search market? Why does the government believe reducing immigration will create a “high-wage, high-value” economy? Why are house prices going up so fast?

In addition to learning about some of the crucial developments of today, Economics teaches key skills such as critical analysis, which will be essential when students progress into the Sixth Form and beyond.

In Year 10, students will learn about the choices we make when we spend our money or allocate our time. They will study how this affects firms and how firms seek to achieve their objectives. They will get an understanding of a key topic of our times, market failure, and what governments can do to help correct these failures.

In Year 11 students will study how economies function and what policies can be used to help them grow sustainably. Additionally, they will also learn about globalisation and international trade.

GCSE Business (New for Sep 2025)

Studying Business explores how companies operate, make decisions, and adapt in a changing world. It covers key areas like marketing, finance, operations, and management while considering external influences such as economic and technological changes. Through real-world examples, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success in business.

The Edexcel GCSE Business course equips students with analytical and evaluative skills to understand and assess the modern business environment. By applying knowledge to real businesses and current events, the course fosters strategic thinking and adaptability, preparing students to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
