Music plays a significant and prominent role in the heart of life at Lingfield College and playing an instrument can help pupils in all areas of their learning and general education.

Music is studied by all pupils in Years 7 to 9 and during this time, a huge range of musical genres, skills and techniques are covered within class time. Listening, performing, composition and aspects of music technology are all covered including film and TV music, singing, gamelan, ukuleles, keyboard skills, reggae, songwriting, the Blues and African drumming.

Over a third of Lingfield senior school students take one-to-one instrumental lessons, whether that's piano, drums or voice. All our instrumental teachers are experts in their fields and offer pupils the chance to excel in their chosen instrument.  As a centre for ABRSM, Trinity and London College of Music, students are also able to take their Grade exams on-site.

Music Centre Facilities

Our music centre facilities are modern and spacious with ample instrument storage areas for pupils. They are temperature controlled, fully soundproofed and equipped with the latest tech.  We have two large Music classrooms equipped with Macs, all with Garageband and Sibelius software. The classrooms are big enough to hold Symphony Orchestra rehearsals and regular concerts. There are also nine soundproofed instrumental practice rooms and a drum studio, all equipped with internal sound systems and a piano/clavinova. These are available for students to practice before, during and after school.

My favourite thing about Music GCSE is being able to have creative freedom through my composition. It has helped me understand more about the pieces I play on my instrument and how they were created.

Enrichment

A vital part of the students’ musical development at Lingfield College are the regular trips to see and hear music in a live setting. Students in all year groups, but particularly GCSE, A Level and Scholars, are given the opportunity to visit top concert halls such as the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Guildhall and the Barbican. Inspiration and great motivation come from these visits and pupils have also enjoyed trips to hear the Royal Philharmonic, London Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as seeing West End productions of Wicked, Les Misérables and the Lion King.

Lingfield also offers a huge choice of groups and ensembles for all musical tastes and talents. For more details visit our Co-Curricular pages.

Music Scholarships

Music holds a very special place in the academic and co-curricular life of the school. Music Scholarships are awarded for musical potential, ability and corresponding examination certificates. An enthusiasm for Music, a love of performing and a willingness to participate in school musical life is essential.
