Scholarships

Music Scholars are required, among other things: to set an example by their standards of musicianship and their commitment to School Music; to show enthusiasm and drive by setting and maintaining high standards of performance, through regular practise and by achieving high marks in Associated Board/Trinity & Guildhall/London College of Music examinations; to support all School Ensembles (Orchestra, Choirs, Bands, etc.); to perform regularly in concerts taking place in the School; to assist the smooth-running of the Music Department by taking on a specific responsibility such as Orchestra Leader, assisting choral rehearsals or leading a training ensemble.

The Music Department also runs an enrichment programme including numerous trips throughout the year to concert halls such as the Royal Festival Hall, Albert Hall and West End theatres. Scholars will be expected to take part in this programme. Pupils are also encouraged to participate in musical activities taking place in the locality and at other venues.

Standards Required / Audition Requirements.

Option 1

Scholars should be able to play on one main instrument (including voice) to a standard which may be the equivalent of:  ABRSM Grade 4 (11+), ABRSM Grade 5 (13+) and ABRSM 6/7 (16+). Applicants are expected to perform two contrasting pieces on their main instrument. They should also be able to talk about their musical interests and what they can offer the Music Department.

Option 2

Scholars should be able to play on two instruments (one of which can be voice) to a standard which may be the equivalent of: ABRSM Grade 3 (11+), Grade 3 on one and Grade 4 on the other (13+) and Grade 5/6 on one and Grade 6/7 on the other (16+). Applicants are expected to perform one piece on each of their instruments. They should also be able to talk about their musical interests and what they can offer the Music Department.

The Music Department looks for musical potential, ability and corresponding examination certificates. An enthusiasm for Music, love of performing and willingness to participate in School Musical Life are essential. At 16+ it is expected an applicant for a Music Scholarship will be approximately ABRSM grade 7/8 standard. Pianists and String players are particularly sought for 16+ Scholarships.

All candidates will be notified whether they have been granted a place for an audition by Thursday 6 December 2018.

Auditions will be held on Thursday 15 November 2018 (16+), Monday 14 January 2019 (11+) and Thursday 17 January 2019 (13+).
