Volunteering in Tanzania: A Life-Changing Adventure for Students
At the end of the summer term, 12 sixth form students along with Miss Cooper and Mr Gonachon travelled to Arushi in Tanzania to embark on a volunteering trip with Projects Abroad.
This annual trip aims to give the students an insight into the lives of people living in Tanzania. The group volunteered on a Care & Community programme assisting local staff in Maasai School to provide care and educational support for local children. The group were involved with helping to organize activities for local children on the ground, ranging from teaching, sports, environmental care, hygiene training and improving infrastructure at the school.
Robbie, Year 12
"Going to Tanzania was an unbelievable experience. We had the opportunity to volunteer at a Maasai school, helping to build a playground and support the kids in the classroom. The children were adorable and the staff were great fun throughout the trip. Surprisingly, the weather was pretty mild, and it was actually hotter back home, so it was very pleasant.
We were constantly busy, making the most of the trip. When we weren’t volunteering, we went on safari to the Tarangire National Park, hiked to the stunning Materuni waterfalls, and learnt about the local culture through singing and dancing workshops. Even when we were just resting at our accommodation, we were always playing games and doing amusing challenges and activities.
The trip was transformative in altering my world view, getting to learn and experience how the Maasai (and other tribes) operate and survive.
I would strongly recommend anyone to go on the trip as it was one of the best two weeks of my life."
