Starting Reception at Lingfield College: Your Questions Answered

Starting reception is a significant milestone, for children and parents alike. At Lingfield College, we understand that choosing the right school setting comes with plenty of questions. Here, we’ve answered some of the most common queries to help you feel confident about your child’s first steps into school life.

What will my child learn in reception?

Reception is where a lifelong love of learning begins. At Lingfield, our Early Years curriculum blends structured teaching with purposeful play, allowing children to explore, question and discover in a way that feels natural and engaging.

Children build strong foundations in phonics, early literacy and numeracy, while also developing creativity, communication and social skills. Whether it’s storytelling, outdoor exploration or hands-on activities, every day is designed to spark curiosity and nurture confidence.

How is the transition from Nursery (or home) supported?

We know that starting reception is a big step for all children. That’s why we place great emphasis on creating a warm, familiar and reassuring environment.

Our experienced staff take time to build strong relationships with each child, ensuring they feel safe, happy and ready to learn. Small class sizes and excellent staff-to-child ratios mean every child is known as an individual and supported according to their needs.

For children moving up from our nursery, the transition is seamless. For those joining us from elsewhere, we provide plenty of opportunities to settle in and feel part of the community from day one.

What does a typical day look like?

For early years at Lingfield, each day is carefully balanced to combine learning, play and rest.

Mornings often include phonics, literacy and group activities, followed by outdoor play and child-led exploration. Afternoons might involve maths, creative activities, Forest School or specialist lessons such as music or PE.

There’s also time built in for quieter moments, like story time, and opportunities for children to recharge, ensuring they remain happy and engaged throughout the day.

Is there a focus on outdoor learning?

Absolutely. Our beautiful countryside setting in Surrey provides the perfect backdrop for outdoor learning, which is a key part of the school experience.

From dedicated play spaces to orchards and Forest School sessions, children are encouraged to explore the natural world, develop independence and build resilience, all while having fun.

How do you support each child as an individual?

At Lingfield, pastoral care isn’t just a system, it’s a culture. Every child is encouraged to be themselves, supported by staff who take the time to understand their interests, strengths and areas for growth.

With tailored teaching approaches and close relationships between staff and pupils, we ensure that each child is both challenged and nurtured, building the confidence to try new things and develop a positive attitude to learning.

What about wrap-around care for busy families?

We understand that flexibility is important for modern family life. Our reception provision includes a comprehensive wrap-around care programme, with a Breakfast Club from 7:30am and after-school care available until 6:15pm.

These sessions are run by familiar staff, offering children a consistent and reassuring routine beyond the school day.

What makes Lingfield College different?

Local Surrey families often tell us it’s the feeling you get when you visit our school; a genuine sense of warmth, community and purpose.

The balance of academic ambition and nurturing pastoral care we provide creates an environment where children feel happy, confident and able to thrive. With a wide range of co-curricular opportunities and a strong emphasis on developing the whole child, every pupil is encouraged to discover what they love and who they want to become.
