Positively You Study Workshops Help Students Develop Effective Learning Habits

Positively You returned to Lingfield College this week to deliver a series of workshops with students across Key Stages 3 and 4.

As part of this programme, students in Years 7, 9, 10 and 11 participated in engaging and interactive study skills workshops designed to help them develop effective learning habits, improve organisation, and build confidence in their approach to studying. The sessions introduced students to a range of practical tools and strategies aimed at increasing motivation, supporting independent learning and raising standards of learning and cognition. A key message throughout was that studying can be both effective and enjoyable.

During the workshops, students explored a variety of techniques to support understanding and retention of information. These included visualisation and association, sticky note summaries, and the Feynman Technique. Students in Year 9 and 10 also learned how to create realistic revision timetables, calculate effective study time, and apply evidence‑based strategies such as spaced repetition and retrieval practice. These approaches help students to study more efficiently while gaining greater ownership of their learning.

The sessions were designed to support different learning styles and placed a strong emphasis on metacognition, encouraging students to reflect on how they learn best. Developing effective study habits is essential for academic success both now and in the future, and these workshops aimed to equip students with skills they can continue to use independently as they progress through school.

To support ongoing learning, students have access to the Positively You online hub, where they can revisit the strategies and resources introduced during the workshops. These ideas will also be reinforced by tutors as part of the PSHE programme.
