New for 2026: GCSE Sociology at Lingfield College

This latest addition reflects our commitment to developing a forward-thinking and relevant curriculum, designed to prepare students for life in a complex and fast-changing world. Following the successful introduction of BTEC Enterprise and GCSE Business last year, Sociology marks the next step in broadening the academic and personal pathways available to our students.

Nationally, Sociology has become one of the fastest-growing GCSE subjects, with entries increasing by more than 40% in recent years. This rise reflects a growing interest among young people in understanding the world around them, particularly issues such as identity, equality, and social justice. Its popularity highlights the subject’s relevance and its strong appeal to students who enjoy debate, discussion and critical thinking.

GCSE Sociology

Sociology explores how people and societies function — and why we behave the way we do. Students will examine the structures and systems that shape everyday life, from families and education to the media, inequality and crime. Through discussion, analysis, and evidence-based learning, they will begin to uncover the forces that influence behaviour, identity, and opportunity.

Students will explore key questions like: 

• Why do people commit crimes?
• How does the media shape our views?
• What causes inequality?
• How do families, schools and governments influence us?

As part of the WJEC Eduqas specification, the course offers a clear and engaging structure with a strong emphasis on analytical writing, evidence-based reasoning and social awareness. These skills provide an excellent foundation for A Levels and university courses such as Politics, Law, Psychology, Criminology, Journalism and Business.
