Introducing Lingfield Prep Wellbeing Dog, Rosco

Welcome to our newest member of the Lingfield team - Wellbeing Dog, Rosco!

We are delighted to announce that Rosco will be joining Lingfield Prep as the new wellbeing dog after passing his training with The Dog Mentor Programme. The Dog Mentor Programme builds on the benefits of the human-animal bond by offering young people who would like to be involved positive experiences with dogs that can help them educationally, developmentally, emotionally and socially. Over the last nine years, The Dog Mentor programme has positively impacted young people in many areas, including self-esteem, behaviour, peer relationships, and better engagement skills. These improvements often result in improved academic achievement.

Rosco (a 6-year-old Pomeranian) passed his therapy dog training on 27th January. He will slowly be introduced to Lingfield Prep over the coming weeks so that staff and pupils to get used to Rosco being around the school. We are aware that there will be some students and staff who, for various reasons, do not feel comfortable around dogs, and this will be handled very carefully, with everyone’s preferences being respected.  Rosco has a programme of activities, such as lunchtime dog walks, ‘Reading with Rosco’ for anxious or struggling readers, and various wellness activities with children.

We believe that The Dog Mentor Programme and Rosco can positively influence the Prep school environment and look forward to the benefits of Rosco for our Pupils and the wider community.

we recognise that some children are a bit reticent around dogs, and we would not allow Rosco to get too close to a child who isn’t comfortable in his presence. Children will not have sole responsibility for or be left alone with Rosco. He will remain on a lead at all times when walking around the school site.
