Meet Lingfield Head of Cricket - Greg Thew
How did you start playing cricket?
I was taken along to a cricket club when I was 4 or 5 years old as a friend of mine from school wanted to play, and I immediately fell in love with the sport. My friend stopped going after 2 weeks or so, and I have been playing ever since. At the age of 7, I started to play representative cricket, and have played and coached cricket all over the world.
What do you like about the game?
One of the main reasons that I love cricket is that it is a constant battle between bat and ball. The bowler is trying to out-think the batter and exploit their weaknesses, whilst the batter is trying to put pressure onto the bowler. There is a constant ebb and flow of momentum, and a game can change at any moment. The game is routed in tradition, however it is constantly evolving and players are becoming more and more innovative in their approach.
How do you plan to inspire the students in the game? What do you look for in great players?
As I move into my second year as Head of Cricket at Lingfield College, I am hoping to build on the foundations that were laid last year and create a culture within the school's cricket programme where all individuals are able to express themselves within their playing and aren't afraid to make mistakes on the field. I am always looking for players to show some flair on top of their fundamental techniques and have a point of difference that allows them to stand out and influence games.
What advice do you have for young cricketers?
My advice to young aspiring cricketers would be to watch as much cricket as possible and play as often as possible. These two elements will help to develop an understanding of the game and its tactics and provide the opportunity to put it into practice. The best players are thinking about the game, and at a youth level, are generally one step ahead. Finally, don't be afraid to make a mistake. This is how we will learn and improve!
