Beyond the Early Years Foundation Stage

At Lingfield College we offer a range of exciting opportunities to enhance learning and to introduce children to a variety of subjects and skills. French and music are delivered by specialist teachers to all Foundation Stage children, as is PE and Drama to Reception children.

“The wider the range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences” Loris Malaguzzi (Regio Emillia founder)

Early Writing

Children engage in many early writing skills activities throughout the Foundation Stage; from using fingers to make lines and circles in sand and shaving foam, to big arm movements during dance. Other activitiles include painting walls, paper on the floor and letter formation.

Every week all of our children from Nursery and Reception go to our well equipped PE hall for PE lessons.

“Children and young people should engage in a variety of types and intensities of physical activity across the week to develop movement skills, muscular fitness, and bone strength.” Chief medical officers report 2019

The report also advises that children under 5 should be active for at least 180 minutes a day.

Lingfield Foundation Stage children have lots of opportunities to learn early phonics skills. All Nursery and Reception children have daily group sessions where children are arranged into ability groups. They also have weekly individual reading time where they can choose a book to be read to them. They can then take this book home to share with their family before returning it the following week. During this time they also go over phonics and numbers that have been specifically tailored to their individual level.

A specialist language teacher provides all Nursery and Reception children with a weekly French lesson.

Forest School

Each week the children at Lingfield College Foundation stage have a Forest School session. This session is led by a trained Forest School Leader.

“Forest school aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners” Forest School Association.

Drama for Reception

Every week the children in Reception have a drama lesson delivered by a specialist teacher. They will perform several productions throughout the year. Each year all children in Nursery and Reception are taught a Christmas nativity by the music and drama department which they perform to their parents.

A specialist teacher gives all Foundation Stage children a weekly lesson, as well as daily singing and playing musical instruments in class.

"Research indicates that at least some musical education has a positive impact on the social and cognitive development of children. And these effects are long-lasting - better hearing, better motor skills, improved memory, better verbal and literacy skills."  Alan Harvey - Neuroscientist and Musician.

Each week the children go to the well-equipped, purpose-built art room to develop their expressive and creative skills.

The children have lots of opportunities through our curriculum and play to take part in adult led experiments, and to explore science concepts and experiment for themselves.

Children have many resources within the classroom and have access to the computer suite within the main school. Each classroom has an interactive white board as well as a desk top computer, ipads, toys with knobs and pulleys, remote control toys and wind up toys for the children to develop their skills.

There is a wide range of extra curricular clubs available to the children including sports clubs, ballet, karate and yoga.
