Academic Scholarships are awarded to pupils who demonstrate all-around academic ability. We are looking for children with solid academic foundations, who are active learners and have inquiring minds. They will be thinkers and problem solvers, able to apply their knowledge and have a positive attitude to their academic studies. They will participate in extracurricular activities and positively contribute to school life.

Music Scholarships will be awarded to talented instrumentalists who enthusiastically contribute to the Music Department in the Prep School and later in Senior School. They may be offered for one or two instruments which they are currently receiving tuition. The candidate should be approaching or exceed the Grade 2 standard on their first instrument. No grade requirements are expected for the second instrument if offered, although a reasonable performance level will be expected.

Sports Scholarships will be awarded to candidates who can contribute to the School’s sporting success. Scholars will be expected to participate fully in all sports. They should be ‘A’ team standard players in at least one, preferably two, of our School’s leading sports (Netball or Football, Hockey and Cricket). However, at this young age, potential and individual skill levels will also be considered. The candidate will be a coachable team player who will reliably and consistently demonstrate the desired attitude to represent the school in a competitive environment.

Academic Scholars and Award holders take part in our Scholars’ Programmes which aim to stimulate their intellectual curiosity and enhance their breadth of knowledge.

The Academic Scholars’ Programme applies to Years 7-10 and consists of 8 carefully planned sessions timetabled throughout the first two terms run by staff or visiting speakers. Presented in the form of workshops or interactive talks, they provide a wealth of scope for lateral thinking, discussion, problem-solving and teamwork. Examples of seminars include Classics and the World of Antiquity, Bioformatics and the Globalisation Effect of the Internet.

To inspire the Scholars further, there is an annual trip organised specifically to enhance the knowledge of each individual. Past trips have included days in Oxford and Cambridge visiting the Universities and also a trip to London, to see the sights.

Candidate standards required

They will take part in co-curricular activities and make a positive contribution to school life.

Sixth Form

Sixth Form Scholarships reward and recognise students with exceptional ability in their intended Sixth Form subjects. Applicants should be on track to predominantly achieve grade 8 and above at GCSE for the subjects they intend to study in the Sixth Form, or subjects that are closely related to their intended courses. 

Scholarships will be offered during the spring Term of Year 11 (to commence in Year 12) and attract a fee remission of 30%.   

Lingfield has a thriving and successful Art Department. Our Art Scholarships recognise creativity and passion as well as artistic talent.

Art Scholars benefit from the excellent teaching and facilities at Lingfield College to enable them to explore and develop their own personal style. Students are actively encouraged to pursue their own artistic interests. Students will attend a weekly Scholars’ Art Club which allows them to experiment with a wide variety of media and techniques.

Art Scholars also benefit from workshop days hosted by visiting practitioners, entry into Art Competitions and trips to galleries and places of interest.

Candidate standards required

Art Scholarships are awarded to candidates who demonstrate unique flair, competence and technique.

Scholarship assessment invitations are granted to candidates primarily on the evidence of a portfolio containing six pieces of work. The results of the assessment together with the portfolio determine the success of the award application. External candidates should also supply a reference to indicate the child’s strengths, interests, enthusiasm, and recent progress. (See Scholarship booklet for details).

The Drama Department provides opportunities for a wide range of practical exploration and performance. We aim to enable students to gain confidence and skills through Drama and Theatre, and to promote a creative appreciation of text, character and the world we live in through performance.

Candidate standards required

Drama Scholarships are awarded to students with outstanding talent and an interest in performance. They will be expected to participate fully in the department’s life, be involved in school productions, and support others by attending the school’s various performances. They will take a leading role in promoting the Drama and Theatre department and be ambassadors for the school. In turn, they will then be encouraged and supported in their development to maximise their potential.

Candidates are invited to an audition and interview with the Director of Drama. Candidates must show a passion for Drama, outstanding performance skills, and a willingness to collaborate. Successful Scholars will be able to demonstrate a sensitive understanding of character, an appreciation of text, strong vocal and physical application, and the ability to respond creatively to direction. Knowledge of live theatre would be an advantage.

Music holds a very special place in the academic and co-curricular life of the school. Music Scholarships are awarded for musical potential, ability and corresponding examination certificates. An enthusiasm for Music, a love of performing and a willingness to participate in school musical life are essential.

Candidate standards required

Option 1. Scholars should play one main instrument (including voice) to a standard equivalent of:

• Year 7 entry - Grade 4+ 
• Year 9 entry - Grade 5+ 
• Year 12 entry - Grade 7+ plus Grade 5 Theory

All major exam boards are accepted e.g. ABRSM/Trinity/Rock School. Applicants are expected to perform two contrasting pieces on their main instrument. They should also be able to talk about their musical interests and what they can offer the Music Department.

Option 2. Scholars should be able to play two instruments (one of which can be voice) to a standard equivalent of:

• Year 7 entry - Grade 3+ on both instruments
• Year 9 entry - Grade 4+ on principal instrument and Grade 3+ on second instrument
• Year 12 entry - Grade 6 on principal instrument and Grade 4/5 on second instrument plus Grade 5 Theory

Applicants are expected to perform two contrasting pieces on their instrument/s in addition to a sight-reading task. They should be able to talk about their musical experiences and what they can offer the Music Department.

Standards Required at Year 12

It is expected that students will then go on to obtain their Grade 8 before completing Year 13. String players are particularly sought for Year 12 scholarships.

At Lingfield College, sport is at the heart of our school community, fostering teamwork, resilience and excellence both on and off the field. Our Sports Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional talent and the ability to make a significant contribution to the school's sporting life.

Candidate standards required

Candidates must play at representative level in any individual sport offered at Lingfield. Applicants will be invited to our annual Sport Scholarship Assessment Day, where they will be evaluated across a range of sports, including Hockey, Football, Cricket, Fitness, Netball for Girls and Rugby for Boys.
