In terms of participation levels, Football leads the way in the popularity stakes. Following pre-season training in August, ten teams participate regularly throughout the Autumn Term, playing their fixtures during midweek and on Saturdays. Each year group fields ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams whilst the 1st XI and 2nd XI squads comprise pupils from Years 11 to 13.
As well as dedicated training slots for each team during the extended lunch breaks, the boys also train during their games afternoon, benefitting from the input of external professional coaches. Team selection is based on merit as well as attitude and, as such, the composition of teams can change regularly.
The teams in Years 7 and 8 play the majority of their matches against the local Prep Schools on Wednesday afternoons and against a number of other independent schools at the weekend.
Years 9 to 13 will attempt, where possible, to play their midweek matches during their games afternoons to ensure matches can be played before the evenings draw-in. Equally, they will play a number of Saturday fixtures against other independent schools.
As well as playing an array of friendly matches, the teams participate in a number of local and national tournaments, notably the Independent Schools Cup at various age groups as well as the Ibstock Place six- a-side tournaments.
Every two years, the Football teams have the opportunity to travel abroad for a Football Tour, most recently to Holland.
