Lingfield is an inclusive school, based on a Christian foundation, which seeks to foster understanding of, and empathy with, people from a wide range of religions and religious traditions; including those who have no religious belief. As such every parent is expected to support the Prep School’s inclusive vision through ensuring that their child participates in all Religious Education lessons and activities which are timetabled. This is in line with the government position that RE should “reflect the fact that the religious traditions in Great Britain are, in the main, Christian while taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain.”
At Lingfield Prep, Religious Education is taught as an academic discipline. We are studying the major world faiths and asking philosophical questions about the world and our place within it as human beings. It is the perfect environment for pupils to develop their critical thinking skills and appreciate that there are many different perspectives about how the world began and how humans should behave within it.
We believe that R.E. should:
- help pupils to develop a positive attitude towards themselves and other people
- teach pupils to respect the right of other people to hold different beliefs from their own and to prepare them for a life in a society of many religions and beliefs
- reflect the needs and concerns of our local area, preparing our pupils for citizenship in the world today and tomorrow, and encouraging them to ask questions such as “How should I behave?”, “What responsibilities do I have?”
