Music Tuition

The Music Department in the Prep School is a positive and encouraging environment in which children can be inspired to play a wide variety of musical instruments. It consists of the Head of Music and 14 visiting specialists.

There are many opportunities available to take part in the instrumental programme, whether you want to rehearse and perform as part of a group or, learn to play an instrument. We offer a broad range of extracurricular groups for instrumentalists, and we also have a comprehensive tuition programme covering a wide range of instruments.

Music Tuition

Music tuition is available in most instruments including piano, trumpet, French horn, tenor horn, trombone, violin, harp, cello, double bass, guitar, flute, clarinet, oboe, mini bassoon, voice, keyboard, drums and orchestral percussion.

The majority of our pupils begin tuition in Years 2 or 3, following a series of taster lessons in Year 2 as part of the school music curriculum, although bright and motivated children from Reception upwards may begin lessons on piano, cello and violin after consultation and with parental support.

Teachers aim to give 30 lessons across the year, usually consisting of 12 sessions in the Autumn and 18 over Spring and Summer. Lessons are 30 minutes long and are organised on a rota system so that your child will not miss the same lesson each week.

Parents are given progress reports twice a year and are invited to an annual Parents Evening. We also encourage parental visits to lessons in action.
