Geography

Geography is the study of Earth’s landscapes, peoples, places and environments. Our Geography curriculum aims to inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. It enables children to develop their knowledge and understanding of the natural and human world in which they live through geographical enquiry, investigation, problem solving and decision making.

Geography is cross-curricular in approach wherever possible, involving other subjects such as ICT, Mathematics, Art, Literacy and RE.

Lingfield Prep School student learning geography and map reading

Key Stage 1

Pupils start to learn about the wider world in which they live alongside carrying out simple geographical field work to study the geography of the school, its grounds and the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment. Topic work on China and India enables pupils to understand geographical similarities and differences between their local area and other places in the world.

Key Stage 2

Pupils learn about and make links between different places in the world, in particular the UK, Europe and the Americas.

Geographical enquiry is carried out inside and outside the classroom, using a range of resources such as maps, atlases, diagrams, globes, photographs and graphs.

Sustainable development is taught as part of some Geography topics, to support work towards maintaining our Eco Schools Green Flag certificate.

Pond Dipping and Field Trips

Children will experience their first taste of field work in the school grounds and local area, learning to collaborate and use geographical skills, concepts and vocabulary, including observing, identifying, measuring and recording aspects of the local area.
