History allows students to develop a deep understanding of the many events in the past that have shaped the world we live in today. In the History Department we ensure all pupils have a sound understanding of chronology, significance, change and continuity, critical thinking and analysis, through the study of fascinating and pivotal periods of the past. We have developed an engaging and cross-curricular syllabus for our pupils.

Key Stage 3

We cover a broad curriculum. Years 7 and 8, as part of the Lower School Curriculum, cover a range of topics that link with other departments. For example, 'Great Lives', 'The road to Democracy' and 'Perspectives of Empire'. In Year 9 students study 20th Century topics such as The Great War, Tsarist Russia and World War Two.

I thought History GCSE was going to be just taking lots of notes, but it's definitely the opposite, the lessons are informative and everyone gets involved in the group discussions.

Courses offered

IGCSE History

The course consists of four units of equal value:

  • A World Divided: Superpower Relations, 1943-1972 – Cold War-era fascinating topics, for example, the Korean War, Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
  • Dictatorship and Conflict in the USSR, 1924-53 – Stalin transformed the Soviet Union from an underdeveloped country to an industrial one. This topic explores purges, WWII and conditions in Soviet Russia.
  • The changing role of International Organisations: The League and the UN c.1919-2011 - This topic explores post WWI successes and failures in International co-operation. It is a very varied and fascinating course covering a range of conflicts throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st Century.
  • The USA, 1918-1941 – This topic looks at how the USA became the economic centre of the world, the divisions in society, the film industry, and the economic highs and lows of the period, the New Deal era.

Enrichment

Beyond the curriculum, the department runs a popular History Society which offers students the opportunity to research periods of history of their choice.

We hold annual lectures in support of our Sixth Form curriculum (open to all students) and we host outside speakers and workshops from ‘The Time Traveller‘. Trips include Battle in Hastings in Year 7 and Berlin for older students.

Follow our department's Instagram Feed and YouTube channel for the latest on what we are doing.
