Year 6 Bikeability

This week the Year 6 children have been participating in Bikeability cycle training, run by Surrey County Council. Bikeability is the only government-recognised cycle training scheme, underpinned by national standards. The aim is to gain practical skills and learn how to cycle safely on today's roads.

After testing on the first day, the following four days the children went out onto local streets with their highly trained instructors, in order to complete their Level 2 Bikeabilty qualification. They learnt how to deal with traffic on short journeys such as cycling to school or the local shops. This includes starting and finishing an on-road journey, recognising typical hazards, understanding the rules of different junctions, letting others on the road know what you are about to do, knowing where to ride on the road and how to safely pass parked vehicles and side roads.

We were very impressed that despite the inclement weather, the children never complained.  They said they really enjoyed the course, learnt some important skills and improved their confidence in riding on roads.
