U11 Girls Win Bronze Medal at National Tournament
On Thursday 22nd November 2018 our U11A girls’ hockey team travelled to the prestigious Lee Valley National Hockey and Tennis Centre, to compete in the ISA National Hockey Finals.
We got off to a fantastic start in our first group match and beat Ashton House School (Isleworth) 6-0. Our next encounter was against Copthill Independent Day School (Linconshire) and proved to be a much more competitive challenge, however, we clinched an important 1-0 victory. This gave us the luxury of only needing a draw in our final group match against Rosemead Prep (Dulwich) to qualify for the cup competition. We continued with our strong attacking play and once again defeated our opponents 4-0.
As a result of our superb performances, we topped the group and progressed into the cup competition, together with all the other group winners and runners up.
We knew all of the cup matches would be extremely difficult, but the girls maintained a positive and determined attitude when preparing for the first match. We started brilliantly against fellow group winners, Crackley Hall (Warwickshire) winning this match 1-0. This was followed by a frustrating 0-0 draw with Malvern St. James (Worcestershire), where we unfortunately could not convert the chances we created in the 7 minute match. This then resulted in a ‘must win’ situation in the final match against Littlegarth (Colchester, Essex). In an end to end contest, we once again created the clearer opportunities to score, however, we could not find that important goal we needed. After two draws and one victory in the round robin format we finished second in our group, which resulted in us just missing out on progressing into the final.
The good news was we still had a bronze medal to play for in the 3rd/4th place playoff match against Holme Grange (Berkshire). In this very short match, neither team could break the deadlock in either normal time nor the period of extra time, therefore, the match was decided by penalty shuttles. In a thrilling and nerve racking shootout, Lingfield ran out worthy 1-0 winners.
Throughout the day we displayed great teamwork and produced some outstanding attacking play. This was supported by extremely solid defending and superb goalkeeping. Lingfield did not lose a match or concede a goal during the whole tournament, which is a fantastic achievement.
We are so proud of all our girls’ performances and their fantastic Bronze medal achievement at this National tournament.
Huge congratulations to; Minnie, Sophia, Olivia, Chloe, Carla, Miya, Jessica and Izzy.
