Croydon Crown Court Trip

On 15th October, Year 13 BTEC Business & Law students visited Croydon Crown Court with Mr Hagan. As part of the Extended Certificate BTEC in Business, Lingfield elect for students to complete a unit on the English Legal System, where they learn about the court structures and how the criminal justice system works.

This year students saw the use of body-worn technology from a police officer used in court as evidence, and also a not guilty verdict in the morning. In the afternoon students then witnessed a sentencing of a defendant who had pleaded guilty to several burglaries. This resulted in a prison sentence of over five years.

Students were particularly lucky this year, as the judge in this case, and the barrister for the prosecution offered an impromptu Q&A session which provided for an invaluable insight into the careers of real legal professionals.
